The Gold (Queen) Standard of Compassion
There's a song that we sing in church that came to mind after reading about The Gold Queen's incredible act of compassion.
Have I done any good in the world today?I encourage you to head over and read about what was able to be accomplished by one human being reaching out to help another human being in need.
Have I helped anyone in need?Have I cheered up the sad and made someone feel glad?If not, I have failed indeed.
(You can also catch The Gold Queen on the latest episode of the Power Word: Gold Podcast.)
Bravo TGQ. You never cease to amaze me.

The Curious Case of "Honest Jim", Rare Goods Vendor
Ever since I worked at an MMORPG company and I found out one of my co-workers who had worked on World of Warcraft had an NPC in WoW named after him I've always thought it would be awesome to have an NPC or item in the game named after me.
While I do have an NPC named after me in a previous MMORPG I worked on, having someone (or something) in World of Warcraft would be awesome.
Earlier tonight I found out about (and bought off trade chat) Erorus' Ledger of Trade which is a reference to Erorus, the creator of The Undermine Journal.
I even went into April and let her know that Erorus has an item in the game and how cool that was. I then also mentioned how it would be cool if I had an item in the game but I likely wasn't popular enough for that.
Later that night I decided to build a Trading Post (of course I would!) for my garrison building in The Spires of Arak.
Imagine my surprise and delight when I used my garrison ability (called "Smuggler's Run") which summons a Rare Goods Vendor and his name was "Honest Jim". I thought that was pretty neat but as I looked closer I started to notice some things.
- He's a human named Jim.
- He has facial hair. (Although, he also has hair on his head which doesn't fit my theory. lol)
- His flavor text reads "If you've got the gold, I've got the goods!".
- He is a Rare Goods Vendor (get it…Rare Goods, as in Blues).
- He sells you many rare items, some at pretty high prices (2,200g for a 28 slot bag!?!).
When I thought about all of the above it dawned on me that someone at Blizzard may have been thinking about me when they made this NPC.
(I have directly asked a few Blizzard employees I've interacted with over the years if there was a chance I'd ever get an item in the game. #iainttooproudtobeg)
2,200g for a bag? That's some ignorant bull…gimme one! |
Being realistic there is a good chance that all the above is purely coincidental and there is no connection at all between "Honest Jim" and myself (Jim Younkin) but in my head I'd like to think there is.
Until someone from Blizzard confirms or denies it I'll just be happy in the knowledge that there's a chance that someone at Blizzard thought enough of me to put an NPC in the game as a reference to me.
Now I can die happy. #micdrop

The Power Word: Gold 2014 Year In Review
It's New Year's Eve and time to put some of my thoughts down about what's happened here at Power Word: Gold this year.
While there has been some fairly drastic changes in the area of gold-making itself due to the release of Warlords of Draenor this post will mainly focus on what's been going on with the blog specifically.
I normally try not to talk too much about the blog itself as I like to let the details be background to the content these end-of-the-year posts are when I allow myself to be a bit more introspective. Read on for more.

WarcraftEcon.net Reborn as WarcraftEcon.com
Last year as I was going through some old links I tried to view my original 250K WarcraftEcon interview and was saddened to find out that WarcraftEcon had gone offline. All that information, all those Hall of Fame interviews were gone forever.
For those of us who have been making gold for a long time, WarcraftEcon was one of the seminal gold-making resources and sources of inspiration. Perhaps best known for it's Hall of Fame series of interviews WarcraftEcon was an important part of gold-making history.
I decided to contact Oligopoly who had run WarcraftEcon.net and see if I could help bring WarcraftEcon back to life and you know what? He said yes! Read on for more information on the return of WarcraftEcon.

Power Word: Gold Turns Three Years Old
If Power Word: Gold were a child it would be toddling around the auction house knocking over weapons racks and crawling on crates of Goblin Rocket Launchers. (We assume. We have no first hand knowledge of what a three year old does…yet.)
We've been writing Power Word: Gold for three years now. That's kinda crazy and kinda cool all at the same time. Read on past the jump for a look back and a look forward.

The Beauty Of Glyphs [Link]
Faid wrote:
"I've been that person, crashing glyph markets for fun and profit. It's a valid tactic for market grooming and is also just a fun way to learn more about markets, your competition, addons, etc. But if someone else trying to mess with your profit margins is upsetting to the point it will drive you out of the market you should probably stick to dailies and not worry too much about the Auction House."
-In Defense of Glyphs over on Clockwork Riot
Her post is a tremendous rallying cry for all you glyph sellers out there. The point-by-point response to Selling Glyphs Scares The Hell Out Of Me was quite thorough.
To paraphrase an old scribe:
"Then [Jim] said unto [Faid], Almost thou persuadest me to be a [Glyph seller]."
Almost. Now, I have some dailies to do.

Item Hoarding [Link]

"I recently watched a livestream where Jim was vendoring 83-84 greens which he sells for like 300-400g each. His reasoning behind this was he did’nt [sic] want them filling up his guild bank so only kept one extra item.
…
I myself have 7, 8, 9, 10 copies of the exact same 83-84 green,I know I can post 1 - 2 and drop the others in the guild bank or mail them off."
-April Gold Making 2013 on The Overcut
Juggling that much unnecessary back stock would drive me nuts.

Celebrating One Year Of The Power Word: Gold Guide
Exactly one year ago today we put The Power Word: Gold Guide up for sale.
Asking people for real-world money was a big change for Power Word: Gold. It was first step in an effort to move Power Word: Gold toward profitability.
Over the previous year we have learned a lot by selling the guide. We have learned about selling products online. We have learned about distribution. We have learned about about pricing. We have learned about marketing. We have learned about customer support.
Most of all, however, we have learned to appreciate the community.
We want to thank each and every one of you who has shown your support for the blog, podcast and livestream by purchasing The Power Word: Gold Guide.
Your support has meant the world to us. Thank you.
