Level 83-84 MoP Armor Sales Data and Analysis
We have been selling level 83-84 Mists of Pandaria items since one month into its release. Today we are going to share some of the sales data for those items that we have collected over the last 4-5 months.
Head past the jump for the sales data and analysis.
Methodology
In order to get our sales information into a spreadsheet for analysis we used a combination of searching Wowhead for the item names and searching our TradeSkillMaster Accounting tab.
As far as we know there is no way to export TradeSkillMaster Accounting data to a spreadsheet thus why we did it by hand. It didn't actually take that long once we got in the groove.
We have given approximate gross sales values. This is the total sales multiplied by the most common price we used for that type of item (245g for all cloth items for example).
These do not take into account the amount we spend on acquiring the items. These numbers are very rough and are used only for comparison against other item types.
We have also broken down the items be faction and level.
One Seller. One Server.
These results are from one seller on one server and should be taken as one person's experience. Every server and faction is different and each person's results will vary.
I still think it is useful to share my own experiences in order to help everyone else see what 5 months of 83-84 sales looks like.
On my particular server I seem to sell more items on the Alliance than the Horde. My server doesn't have a equal demand on Horde vs. Alliance. I am also more active on the Alliance side.
The Charts
Below are the sales numbers for the various types of armor. I have not broken them down according to suffix (…of the Sorcerer etc.) as that was beyond the scope of what I was wanting to accomplish (which was to get a general idea of the breakdown of sales according to item type and level).
The charts are organized by the total item sales across both factions. This is to make it easier to identify good selling items.

Leather is a very interesting story. Not only did we sell more 83 items than 84 (60% to 40%) but we also sold many more items on the Alliance than the Horde (73% to 27%).

Mail items are fairly evenly split between 83 and 84 items. I am selling a significant amount more on the Alliance (63% to 37%).

Horde | 29 | 11,484 | 43% | |||
All Items | 115 | 45,540 | ||||
Plate items brought us the most gold overall. We sell our plate items at 396g each compared to most other items which we were generally selling for 245g each.
The Alliance/Horde split for plate items was very close whereas the 83 items far outsold the 84 items (66% to 34%).
Grand Total
Grand Totals | Sold | Value | Gold %
Cloth | 118 | 28,910 | 22% | |||
Leather | 124 | 30,380 | 23% | |||
115 | 28,175 | 21% | ||||
Plate | 115 | 45,540 | 34% | |||
While any sort of analysis like this is going to be an exercise in reduction I think the above grand totals shows us a few interesting things.
For one it validates our own gut instinct that plate items can sell just as well at a higher price (396g each vs. 245g each) than other items.
Level Splits
Level Splits | % | Sold | Value
Cloth 83 | 55% | 65 | 15,925 | ||
Cloth 84 | 45% | 53 | 12,985 | ||
Leather 83 | 60% | 75 | 18,375
Leather 84 | 40% | 49 | 12,005
Mail 83 | 57% | 65 | 15,925 | ||
Mail 84 | 43% | 50 | 12,250 | ||
Plate 83 | 66% | 44 | 17,424 | ||
Plate 84 | 34% | 23 | 9,108 | ||
Another interesting thing was to note what armor types sold significantly more at level 83 than level 84. As you can see from the chart above leather and plate items sold far more level 83 items than level 84.
Cloth and mail have much more even splits than leather and plate.
While I can't say for sure it is interesting to note that tanks in World of Warcraft wear only two types of armor: leather (Druids and Monks) and plate (Warriors, Paladins and Death Knights).
Tanks A Lot
Is it possible that we are able to sell more leather and plate items because people are more apt to gear up a tank properly for dungeons than they are for DPS or heals?
I think that is a very good possibility. I know for myself I am more apt to care about having proper gear if I am planning on tanking dungeons.
Tanking is much more demanding gear-wise than DPSing of Healing. A few bad experiences trying to tank with the wrong gear in LFD would send anyone to the auction house to improve their tanking gear so as not to embarrass themselves in their next run.
This leads us to an idea. Should we be separating out tank-specific level 83 items and pricing them higher? The level 83 plate item sales show that we can sell items at a higher price for beginning tanks.
Something interesting to note and something we will consider doing in the future.
Conclusion
I hope these charts and analysis have been useful. If you wanted to do your own analysis all the raw data is above.
We love doing this type of analysis. It helps us uncover things in the sales data that we might not otherwise be able to see (like the tanking item sales) if we were just trying to keep the market in our head.
Gut instincts can go a long way but in-depth analysis of sales can reveal much more.
We will likely continue to go over the data and may find even more interesting insights.

ReplyDeleteGives me some food for thought...
83-84 sales on my realm are steady, but slow - I am still actually selling more 77-78 items
I think you are onto something with the Tank gear ideas... ;)
I sell 77-80 but just think I must have many fewer items than 83-84 simply because I've sold out and not been active on restocking. That along with a smaller amount coming into the AH due to it not being Cata.
DeleteStill a great market. I'll have to be more vigilant.
