Power Word: Gold 2011 Year End Review
In this long-form (48 min) video I discuss the Power Word: Gold 2011 year end review as well as look forward to what 2012 may bring for PW:G and the World of Warcraft gold-making community at large.
How did 2011 treat you and what do you look forward to in 2012? Let us know in the comments below (or even better create your own 2011 year end review video and post a link).

New Star Wars: The Old Republic Section of Power Word: Gold Launched
In preparation for the upcoming release of Star Wars: The Old Republic we've launched a new section of Power Word: Gold dedicated to exploring the ins-and-outs of the SWTOR economy. You can find it at tor.powerwordgold.net. We are excited about this new section mainly because of the opportunity to explore a brand new MMO and it's corresponding economy.
For us making gold has always been about learning new things, trying new techniques and solving new puzzles. The SWTOR launch offers us all these. That said, as we stated in our introductory PW:G TOR post "The Journey Of A Thousand Credits", we don't plan on mixing our TOR chocolate into our WoW peanut butter. More mixed metaphors after the jump.

25 Must-Follow Gold-Making Twitterers
A shot of our tweetdeck this morning. |
Since we started the @PowerWordGold twitter account at the beginning of the year we've seen a large increase in the amount of gold-makers (bloggers and players alike) who are joining twitter. A wonderful milieu of gold making goodness has developed. a primordial ooze of news, tips, questions and answers bubbles up on twitter daily. If you want to know what is going on in World of Warcraft gold-making right now twitter is a great place to start looking.
Today I am going to be listing my own 25 must-follow gold-making twitterers. If you have even the slightest interest in making gold than these should be the first 25 people you follow. Head past the jump for the list.

We finally have the list we've all been clamoring for: Keelhauls list of mogging items he's been making a killing off of since Patch 4.3 and the introduction of Transmogrification. Feel free to bookmark this post as I think it will be one many of us will be referring back to a lot. Let's hop past the jump and straight into the list.

Building A Valor Bracer Shopping List
In this video "WoW Gold-Making - Auctionator & Wowhead For Shopping Lists" I go over how to use Wowhead's item search filters to find bind-on-equip (BOE) item level 397 bracers (known as "Valor Bracers") and add them to an Auctionator shopping list. (The filter I build in the video can be found here.)
I build these type of shopping lists to quickly find which (if any) Valor Bracers I should be buying from players selling them in trade chat for flipping purposes. It should be noted that Valor Boots are also BOE and can be bought/sold in the same way.
For a written description of this process (although the items are now outdated) see our previous post "Buying And Selling Valor Boots For Profit".

How The Economics of Dreamcloth Are Changing
While working on one of my two tailors today I made a fairly startling discovery. The economics of creating Dreamcloth have completely changed. I first heard rumblings about this via @ssmith0911 and @msherretz on twitter. Basically the way I made Dreamcloth before Patch 4.3 very well may be a thing of the past.
I've been selling off my stocks of Dreamcloth as spell threads and had planned on simply making more the way I always had. I'm glad I didn't. Read on past the jump for my analysis of things every tailor should consider before making one more piece of Dreamcloth.

My Mailbox Tactics For Tracking Sales
In this video I go over my own techniques for using the addons Postal and My Sales to quickly keep track how my sales are going.
Here is an image of the Postal settings I discuss about in the video.
(As a side note: I was experimenting with using a new technique for doing live multi-screen section videos. It's a bit rough and rambly but I thought it worked out pretty good. Feel free to give me any feedback in the comments.)

Introducing "The Power Word: Gold Chronicle" - The Latest Gold-Making News All In One Spot
I was laying in bed the other night and I had one of those ideas that literally keeps you up at night. I knew right then that no matter how late it was I had to get up and build what was in my head. The fruits of my labor are The Power Word: Gold Chronicle. (Read today's as well as yesterday's edition.)
The Power Word Gold Chronicle (or just "The Chronicle") is a special sub-section of Power Word: Gold (chronicle.powerwordgold.net) providing the most recent gold-making posts from around the community in a simple newspaper-style layout. It has it's own RSS feed that runs completely separate from The Power Word: Gold's RSS feed so be sure you're subscribed to both. I plan to update The Chronicle multiple times a week.
Each edition of The Chronicle is hand laid out and will included many of the most up-to-date gold-making posts from around the community. While similar to automatically-generated gold-making news collections (most notibly the excellent news page at The Undermine Journal) and blogrolls exist (including our own) I think that The Chronicle will provide a nice quiet place to browse what the gold-making community is talking about at the moment.
Enjoy.

WoW Gold-Making Changes In Patch 4.3 Megapost
Another patch day means another Power Word: Gold Patch Megapost. Whether you live in the EU or are stuck at work strap in and get your F5 keys ready. I've been sufficiently caffeinated and have appropriate patching/posting music. My ear's to the ground via twitter and a fire hose of RSS feeds. It's business time!
(If you want to chat with those who are poking the patch with a stick right now The Consortium's IRC chat is a great place to start.)
I'll be updating this post live as information comes in. As with any megapost the information will be posted as I find it and will likely not be the "prettiest" post you've ever seen. Enough jabber-jawing! Hop past the jump and let's get this show on the road!

The State of Gold-Making Blogging As 2011 Closes
After adding another new gold-making blog to The World Of Warcraft Gold Blog Directory (as well as updating the activity levels on the directory) I had to stop and take a bit of time to write a little about the tremendous blossoming of gold-making blogs we've seen over this last year.
There has never been a better time to be a player looking for information on how to make gold in World of Warcraft. Frankly I'm often overwhelmed by the amount of new information coming out of gold-making blogs (both old and new) on a daily basis. Keeping up with my RSS reader often feels like trying to take a drink out of a fire hose.
Read on after the jump for a few of my thoughts about where gold-making blogging has been and where it's going.

Confessions of a Mogging Fiend
Today's guest post was written by Keelhaul (Twitter: @DEazeroth). If you would like your guest post included on Power Word: Gold feel free to contact us at [email protected].
When transmogrification was announced I was really intrigued. Obviously. Right? I mean I ended up starting a blog and noodled on the subject for about six weeks. It's just a fantastic topic and one that is going to remain a stable area of interest and intrigue for a lot of players.
While I'm no longer able to maintain the blog (due to time constraints with our newborn son who's not sleeping more than 2 hrs at a time btw - ugh) I am still in and out of WoW as I try to complete various transmog sets for my 8 toons.
I'll tell you what. Sitting there on a chair from 2-4 in the morning with a baby on your shoulder offers plenty of time to sit and watch the market from the mobile armory on my iPhone. I've begun a little project in this way and I mentioned it to flux and he asked me to write a post about it. So here goes. (After the jump of course.)

Today's guest post and video were created by reader (and erstwhile podcast guest and contributor) Ruls. Follow Ruls on twitter at @formerruling. If you would like to write a guest post for Power Word: Gold contact us at [email protected].
When I first considered making a set of videos related to gold making I knew I wanted to first focus on demystifying the process. Today's guest post was written by reader Snnowman of the Frostmane server. If you would like to write a guest post for Power Word: Gold contact us at [email protected].
What started as a way to fund my many alts ended in a quest for more.
I got on my gold making kick off and on during Wrath of the Lich King. I wanted the Traveler's Tundra Mammoth so, like anyone else without direction, turned to farming. I sit at the keyboard grinding countless mobs for a few greens and Frostweave Cloth thinking their has to be a better way. Read how after the jump.

Going Into Low Power Mode
Owing to current and upcoming real-life circumstances as well as a recent decline in my available World of Warcraft playtime I've decided to put Power Word: Gold into a sort of "Low Power" mode for now.
This means posting will be done on an "as needed" basis. When something strikes my fancy or I feel is important to the readership I'll post.
The podcast will also be done on an "as needed" basis. I won't be doing podcasts on a regular schedule but instead putting them together as needed.
I will still be reading other gold-making blogs as well as maintaining The World Of Warcraft Gold Blog Directory and the Community Gold-Making Milestones. If you have a gold-making blog with 6+ posts and want to be added to the Directory or have a gold-making milestone you'd like added please send me an email at [email protected].
I don't have any definite timeline on when Power Word: Gold may shift back into "Full Power" mode but when that time comes I'll be sure to let everyone know. Until then you'll still be hearing from me from time to time.
I plan to stay fairly active on twitter and facebook for now so please feel free contact me there with any questions, comments, news or info.
Thanks,
-flux

Steve Jobs, 1955-2011 - My Example Of Excellence For Over 13 Years.
Apologies for going a little off topic but we all lost a shining example of excellence today.
On the Apple website announcing Steve Job's passing was the following: If you would like to share your thoughts, memories, and condolences, please email [email protected].
Below is what I wrote to Steve.
Steve,
I came to really know and love Apple right after you had come back to the company. The iMac was so much more than any other computer I'd seen in my life. It was just "right". Since then you continued to build product after product that inspired my and changed my life.
More than anything you showed that excellence is possible if only you believe and are dedicated to making the absolute best product you can.
My life will forever be changed by your example and I hope to live up to that example.
You will be missed but not forgotten Steve.
With gratitude,
-Jim Younkin
While the ache I feel in my heart for the loss of Steve will take a while to pass the fact that even right up until the end he was leading by example will be something I will remember for the rest of my life.

Raw Cataclysm Gems Can't Be Vendored On PTR
As reported on twitter by @JoshDJX Cataclysm uncommon and rare gems on the PTR currently show as having "No Sale Price" and can not be sold to vendors.
I hopped on the PTR and can confirm I am seeing the same thing. It seems that lower raw gems may not be affected as raw Tigerseye and Malachite still have a vendor price. The same was true for the cut uncommon and cut rare Cataclysm gems I tested.
After Patch 4.3 you may have to cut each and every gem in order sell it to a vendor. So what if anything should you do before the patch if we have large stocks of undervalued rare and uncommon Cataclysm gems we were planning to vendor? Head past the jump for PTR prices, maths and some suggestions.

Breaking Down The Datamined Epic Gem Information
World of Warcraft Patch 4.3 is now available for testing on the Public Test Realm (PTR) and with new PTRs comes people who "mine" the data contained in these new patches to bring us lots of new and exciting information.
In the last few days there has been a flurry of new information about the profession changes and additions that will most likely be introduced in Patch 4.3. The two most thorough are "Patch 4.3 - PTR Build 14732 - Spell Changes, New Items, Maps, and More!" at Wowhead News and "Patch 4.3 on PTR" at MMO Champion.
After the jump I'm going to be doing my best to break down the epic gem information which was recently made available via this datamining and analyze what it could mean to us as gold-makers. I'll also be giving a few ideas on how the datamined information matches up with epic gem information given in recent interviews.

One-Handed Mace Mog Flipping Recommendations
Today's guest post was written by Keelhaul who runs the blog Disenchanting Azeroth (Twitter: @DEazeroth). If you're interested in writing a guest post for Power Word: Gold please contact us at [email protected].
Many of these items can be found on the auction house now for very low prices. I have The Undermine Journal email alerts set up for many of these items and have been picking them up often between 50-100 gold. The max I recommend you paying for these pre-4.3 is around 200 gold.
Head past the jump for the recommended one-handed mace list.

Recommended One-Handed Swords To Sell For Mogging
Today's guest post was written by Keelhaul who runs the blog Disenchanting Azeroth (Twitter: @DEazeroth). If you're interested in writing a guest post for Power Word: Gold please contact us at [email protected].
Many of these items can be found on the auction house now for very low prices. I have The Undermine Journal email alerts set up for many of these items and have been picking them up often between 50-100 gold. (The max I recommend you paying for these pre-4.3 is around 200 gold.)
Head past the jump for the recommended one-handed swords list.

Ghostcrawler: Epic Gems To Be Individual Drops From 4.3 Raid Bosses
It's official (kind of): Epic gems in 4.3 will have a small chance to come from a "geode" individual players will get each time they kill a 4.3 raid boss. This means that (at least initially) there will be no way for gold-makers to "farm" or produce epic gems (unless they are raiders). Chances for epic gems to drop from "geodes" rare enough that it may take all of patch 4.3 to replace a single player's gems with epic red gems.
Read the interview with Greg "Ghostcrawler" Street as well as our initial reactions after the jump.

Good Morning! (Or Could It Be Evening?)
Today's guest post was written by Alyzande from The Gold Queen. Today's Power Word: Gold post can be found over on Epidermuss' blog Wragstoriches.
Timing is everything. It has always been the key between making lots of gold and making LOTS of gold. Know when to buy and when to sell.
Buy your raw materials at the weekend. Raw materials are those that come from the wild, plucked from the ground or monster corpses. I'm talking about all the ores, herbs, and cloth types. It is no secret that player numbers increase at the weekends and with more players comes higher supply and thus lower prices. To cut a long story short buying your ore and herbs at the weekend can shave 20% off the normal prices.
Being a gold gamer though takes our focus to selling. Certain items sell at different times of the day and different times of the week (almost entirely) due to the numbers of target buyers online. Epic Bind of Equip (BOE) items change dramatically. Last weekend my Treads of the Craft sold for 30,000 gold. During the weekday evening their prices are 21,000 gold buyout. They cost me 18,000 gold to make with leatherworking. I prefer the 12,000 gold profit to the 3,000 gold . I'm sure agree.
Raid times are early evening until midnight (a little longer for hardcore raiders). Between the hours of school finishing until raid starting players are eager to stock up with raid food and flasks and will pay extra to make sure they have exactly what they need.
After a raid players come jumping into the auction house full of glee with their new shiny items ready to enchant and gem them. Both enchants and gems sell nicely at other times but fly off the shelves as fast as you can restock after the raids finish.
The final interesting time I've noticed is that leveling gear (greens with good stats) sell quickly and steadily at a low price at the weekend in a market catering to casual gamers. In the weekday those stats must be absolutely perfect because your target market is the alts of more hardcore players who will pay extra for an item which will last longer.
Have you noticed a particular time when your items sell very well or considerably slower?

What Makes a Mogging Item Worth Selling?
With mogging coming in Patch 4.3 many of us have been talking about the potential of items increasing in value due to their desirability as transmogrification items. Today's reader question asks how we should be determining which items to pick up now for resale after Patch 4.3.
While the mogging market is still a theory at this stage that doesn't mean we prepare to reap profits from players wanting to acquire weapons and armor that look great. Follow us after the jump where we discuss what attributes to look for in potential mogging items.

The Shape of The Mogging Market And Staves
Today's guest post was written by Keelhaul from Disenchanting Azeroth. If you would like your guest post featured on Power Word: Gold contact us at [email protected].
First, a few market observations. After an initial wave of BoE sales, things have slowed down a bit. I half-expected this because transmogrification is likely going to move at the pace of a typical adoption curve.
The Transmogrification Adoption Curve |
This feature is going to be big enough that it warrants looking at the potential for change in the market in such a fashion. Learn more about the Transmogrification Curve after the jump.

Dealing With Super Competitive Glyph Markets
Today's gold-making question comes from a reader who's just started on the road to glyph profit but ran into some pretty scary competition. The glyph market can be one of the most fiercely competitive markets in the whole game. Read on past the jump to to read their question and my answer.

Selling Classic Raid Runs To Moggers
Today's guest post was written by Keelhaul from the Disenchanting Azeroth blog. If you would like your guest post featured on Power Word: Gold contact us at [email protected].
Throwback gear in 4.3 actually breathes new life into throwback gold-making opportunities for experienced players. The ol' Hand of A'dal vials model for gold-making can be resurrected immediately, and GDKP runs have a new reason for pulling buyers into raids. Follow us after the jump and start thinking out of the box and applying a gold value to actual bosses, rather than to items.

10 Tips For Starting A Gold-Making Blog
Power Word: Gold (Circa February 2011) |

Auction Basics - Auctionator and Selective Undercutting
Selling something for the absolute cheapest price isn't always the best strategy when it comes to the auction house. While I've discussed using Auctionator for undercutting in the past but I thought it would be good to break it down to the most basic level. The accompanying video (embedded above) covers the same info as this post but in a more audio/visual way.
The three reasons we want to use Auctionator's "Sell" tab when selectively undercutting are to analyize the pricing landscape, find matching stack sizes and quickly undercut a specific auction price. Follow us after the jump where we break each one down in detail and help you become more conscious (and profitable) auctioneers.

BOE 2H Axes - Analysis Of What Might Sell
Today's guest post was written by Keelhaul who runs the blog Disenchanting Azeroth (Twitter: @DEazeroth). If you're interested in writing a guest post for Power Word: Gold please contact us at [email protected].
METHODOLOGY:
1) With personalization becoming so valuable in 4.3 with transmogrification, I'm predicting we'll see over time that a player's ability to stand out among their peers will likely become highly desirable. So what can we do from a BoE seller's standpoint? The answer is rather than wait to see what's unique, let's analyze it ahead of time and plan ahead.
2) Since this was an exercise for gold making, I've focused only on BoEs.
3 I've targeted Rare and Epic quality items, since I'm not sure about greens for transmogrification.
I pulled together the BoE 2H Axes for an analysis last night, this is what I came up with. First off, a summary for the TLDR audience:
Based on my analysis, the 2H Axe market could yield a couple of gems. I didn't push to 5, because there's that much of a gap between these 3 and the rest of their peers. Read on after the jump to find out my top 3 recommended BoE 2H Axes to target/craft for resale to moggers.

BOE Shields - An Analysis Of What Might Sell Post Patch 4.3
Today's guest post was written by Keelhaul (@DEazeroth). If you're interested in writing a guest post for Power Word: Gold please contact us at [email protected].
So I did a little perusing of the Shields category, and this is what I came up with. First off, a summary for the TLDR audience:
The market for BoE Shields for transmogrification is going to be slim. Find my recommended top 5 BoE Shields to target/craft for resale for transmogrification after the jump.
